Foodie Tuesday: Your Perfect Post St. Patty’s Day Cure

Admit it, you probably over indulged this past weekend. I know I did, and my liver’s definitely in need of a detox. After a weekend of seeing green, I think it’s only fitting that the cure be something green as well. You can probably guess what I’m about to say…a green smoothie. The greenest part of this smoothie is, surprisingly, not kale or spinach, but a liver detoxifying superfood: spirulina!

Spirulina, a blue-green algae, is a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Spirulina boasts several health benefits, such as boosting the immune system, providing anti-inflammatory agents, antioxidants and vitamin A. No other food that has a higher volume of beta carotene, which is converted to Vitamin A in the body, than spirulina. Vitamin A is stored in the liver until it is needed by the body, so it doesn’t need to be consumed every day.

However, after a day (or two or three) of heavy duty liver work, you’re gonna want some Vitamin A in your diet ASAP. You don’t need a lot of spirulina to get the job done, and consuming too much can even be harmful. One teaspoon or a supplement tablet of spirulina is all you need, providing the equivalent of eating two fruits and more.

Knowing this, I decided to kick my normal green smoothie recipe up a notch with a teaspoon of spirulina!

Lindsay’s So Green It’s Brown Smoothie

I wasn't kidding with that recipe title.

1 cup non-dairy milk (I use unsweetened almond milk but do what you feel if it’s real.)

1 frozen banana (It doesn’t have to be frozen, but the consistency is so creamy when it is.)

1 cup mixed berries or other fresh/frozen fruit (I am hopelessly devoted to Trader Joe’s Very Cherry Berry Blend and would like it to be berried with me when I die.)

1-2 cups fresh/frozen spinach/kale/chard/whatever greens you like

1 scoop Vega nutrional shake powder or your favorite vegan nutritional shake powder (I personally love Vega’s chocolate flavor, but this is completely optional.)

1 teaspoon organic spirulina!

I just popped it all into the blender and let it blend into a gross looking, yummy tasting liquid.

Ta da!

I like my smoothies pretty thick so if you want to thin yours out a bit, just add more milk.

Now I know fried breakfast food may seem like the perfect remedy for a hangover courtesy of St. Patrick, but nothing drives the (metaphorical) snakes out of your liver like some spirulina. Unlike an ugly shirt that says “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” spirulina is exactly the type of green you want in your life any day, not just after St. Patty’s Day.

    Yum!! Gotta find the Spirulina!! This sounds like my breakfast minus the spirulina..

      Thanks, Charlene! This actually is my breakfast (sometimes with the spirulina, sometimes without)! And yeah, I found some high quality spirulina powder at my local Whole Foods but you can also order some from multiple places online too!
