The white rum brand joined the Sea Turtle Conservancy for a campaign called “Kill the Lights, Save the Turtles,” which encourages businesses along Florida beaches to retrofit lights using amber LED and other turtle-safe technologies to create safer nesting conditions.
In the video, you’ll learn how the campaign is beneficial towards raising awareness for sea turtles’ nesting sites and how thousands of turtles were saved within the previous year.
Artificial lighting is a leading cause of death among sea turtles, attracting both nesting females and hatchlings. The creatures’ natural instinct is to follow the light from the moon and stars to find the sea, so artificial lights along the beach can lead them to parking lots and roads. The campaign helped raise awareness about sea turtles and convinced businesses to replace typical lighting with amber or red LED lights, which are less disruptive to sea turtles, at seaside hotels and restaurants in Florida.
A series of “Nocturtle Parties” at St. Pete Beach establishments engaged the local community, inviting them to drink rum, have fun and save the turtles. To support darker shores, guests made their own glow-in-the-dark T-shirts at screen-printing stations and enjoyed signature Dark & Beachy cocktails made with The Naked Turtle.
“Sea turtles play a really important role in the ecosystem that helps the whole environment thrive,” says David Godfrey, executive director of the Sea Turtle Conservancy. “It really adds up. You’re talking about thousands of hatchlings being saved through this program.”
